De Philips GoGear Connect is een zogenaamde portable Media Player, PMP. Het bijzondere aan deze Philips GoGear Connect PMP is dat deze op Android draait. De GoGear Connect is in de markt gezet als concurrent van ondermeer de iPod. Het is overigens opvallend dat Philips voor een PMP heeft gekozen en geen telefoonfunctie heeft ingebouwd, daarmee was de GoGear nog veelzijdiger geweest. De Philips GoGear Connect heeft een 3,2 Inch capacitief touchscreen en id verkrijgbaar met 8, 16 en 32GB opslagcapaciteit. Daarnaast is uitbreiding met een SD-kaart mogelijk. De GoGear heeft toegang tot de Android Market zodat apps kunnen worden toegevoegd.

De specs maken verder melding van Android 2.1, WiFi, Bluetooth en een 2Mp camera. Er is een microfoon en luidspreker aanwezig wat er op kan duiden dat bellen via VoIP tot de mogelijkheden behoort. Aan de 8GB-versie hangt een prijskaartje van €249,- Wanneer de Philips GoGear in de winkel zal liggen is nog niet bekend.

Met Foursquare kun je met behulp van je Android-telefoon op een bepaalde locatie inchecken, dat kan bijvoorbeeld een restaurant, winkel of cafe zijn. Wanneer je inchecked kun je je vrienden laten weten waar je op dat moment bent via Twitter en Facebook. Ontdek je een nieuw restaurant dan kun je deze aan de Foursquare database toevoegen. Op deze manier ontstaat een groot bestand met diverse interessante locaties die nuttig kan zijn wanneer je bijvoorbeeld een restaurant of supermarkt zoekt. Binnen Foursquare is een spel-element ingebouwd. Door veel te reizen en onderweg op locaties in te checken kun je zogenaamde badges verdienen. Ben jij degene die het meest een bepaalde locatie bezoekt kun je de mayor van die locatie worden. Tot voor kort moest je steeds de Foursquare applicatie op je Android-telefoon starten om van de dienst gebruik te kunnen maken. Met de release van de laatste versie van Vlingo is dat verleden tijd.

Vlingo is een zogenaamde voice user interface. In het kort betekend dit dat je via spraak-commando’s je telefoonfuncties kunt bedienen en applicaties starten. Wil je inchecken op een bepaalde locatie dan volstaat het Vlingo via de widget op je homescreen te starten en “Check into De Drie Gezusters” waarna Foursquare opent en je inchecked op de genoemde locatie. Nog een extra opmerking toe te voegen via de Shout functie binnen Foursquare? ook dat kan via Vlingo. Wil je weten waar je vrienden zijn, een eenvoudig “Where are my friends?” volstaat. Naast de Fousquare-functie kun je Vlingo ook gebruiken om een Email of SMS-bericht te versturen of je Twitter-status te updaten. Om gebruik te kunnen maken van Vlingo heb je Android 2.0 of hoger nodig.

De iPad van Apple lijkt een ware tablet-hype veroorzaakt te hebben. Diverse fabrikanten vallen over elkaar heen om ook een tablet op de markt te brengen. De meeste tegenstrevers van de iPad draaien op Android, zo ook de Galaxy Tab van Samsung. Dit tablet heeft een 1GHz processor, een 7 Inch capacitief scherm en draait op Android 2.2 voorzien van Samsung’s eigen Touchwiz interface. Al met al lijkt de Samsung Galaxy Tab wellicht nog het meest op een grote broer van de succesvolle Galaxy S Android-telefoon. De nu verschenen hands-on video geeft een eerste indruk van het nieuwe Android-tablet van Samsung. De officiele presentatie van de Galaxy Tab vind plaats tijdens de IFA die vanaf a.s. vrijdag in Berlijn gehouden wordt.

Afgelopen Woensdag kon je hier op Postbus31 TechBlog lezen dat er een Beta van Angry Birds voor Android aan komt. Om voor de beta in aanmerking te komen zou je je moeten inschrijven op de website van de ontwikkelaar. De respons was zo overweldigend dat ontwikkelaar Rovio heeft besloten de beta van Angry Birds voor iedereen toegankelijk te maken door deze vanaf aanstaande Vrijdag via de Android Market aan te bieden.

Omdat het een beta betreft is het niet zeker op welke android-telefoons Angry Birds goed zal werken. Nog één nachtje slapen en we weten het. Het is overigens nog niet bekend wanneer de definitieve versie in de Android Market zal verschijnen en wat deze zal gaan kosten.

This week, we were planning to run a closed beta test of Angry Birds Lite for Android. Due to the massive response and demand from the Android community, we have decided to make Angry Birds Lite Beta available for everybody through the Android Market this Friday.

Please note that this will be the beta version of the application which is still undergoing final testing before official release. Angry Birds Lite Beta is presented on an “as is” basis, and we cannot guarantee its functionality on every Android device.

Angry Birds Lite Beta will run on second generation Android devices and upwards.

We have tested the game on a number of Android devices, and we would love to hear your feedback on how the game is performing on your personal device. Wanneer je een echt buitenmens bent die graag eens met de mountainbike op stap gaat of zijn hand niet omdraait voor een survivaltocht dan moest je deze activiteiten tot voor kort zonder Android-telefoon doen. Die tijd is echter voorbij nu de Motorola DEVY op de markt komt. Deze zogenaamde ruggerized Android-telefoon kan tegen een stootje en is krasvast, stof en waterbestendig. Door toepassing van de eigen Motoblur-interface is het nu ook tijdens je buitenactiviteiten mogelijk om je vrienden op gezette tijden een een bericht te sturen zonder dat je bang hoeft te zijn dat je android-telefoon tijdens je tocht het leven laat.

De Motorola DEVY heeft een 3,7 Inch 480×854 touchscreen, een 5Mp camera met flits en autofocus, GPS, WiFi een 1540mA accu en draait op android 2.1. De eerder genoemde Motoblur interface is helemaal gericht op sociale netwerken, je contacten en Email.

De Motorola DEVY zal later dit jaar ook in Europa op de markt komen.

Angry Birds is op de iPhone een enorm succes. Het  €0,79 kostende spel staat sinds de release hoog in de ranglijsten. Het doel van het spel is om met diverse soorten volgels een groep varkens te verslaan die het op de eieren van de vogels voorzien hebben. de varkens hebben zich in diverse bouwwerken verschanst en door de vogels met een katapult op die bouwwerken af te schieten zijn ze te vernietigen. Het is al langer bekend dat Angry Birds ook naar Android komt, en dat moment komt nu steeds dichterbij. Het enige wat een officiele release nog in de weg staat een een grote publieke beta-test, en die start aanstaande vrijdag.

Het mooie is dat iedereen die zich heeft ingeschreven bij de ontwikkelaar een uitnodiging voor de Beta zal ontvangen, met recht een massale beta-test dus. Heb je je nog niet ingeschreven? Doe dit dan snel via Android.AngryBirds.com.

Precies een jaar na de introductie van de Motorola Cliq/Dext in de VS is deze Android-telefoon nu ook in Nederland verkrijgbaar. Toen de Dext werd aangekondigd kon deze prima meekomen met de concurrentie. Met Android 1.5, een Qualcomm processor op 528MHz en een normaal TFT-scherm staan de zaken er nu echter anders voor nu snelheden van 1GHz en een Amoled scherm gemeengoed zijn. Toch heeft de Motorola Dext nog twee troeven in handen: een hardware QWERTY-toetsenbord en Motorola’s eigen Motoblur interface. Bij deze aangepaste interface staan sociale netwerken centraal en kun je vanaf je homescreen eenvoudig je status updaten of nieuwe berichten van je vrienden lezen.

Zoals gezegd wordt de Motorola Dext in Nederland geleverd de oude Android 1.5 versie. Dat feit alleen hoeft geen probleem te zijn, ware het niet dat Motorola heeft laten weten dat de Dext geen update naar Android 2.1 zal krijgen. Juist die nieuwe android-versie had ervoor kunnen zorgen dat de Dext nog enigszins met de rest van de Androids zou kunnen meekomen. Hiermee lijken de kansen op een verkoopsucces voor dit toestel in één klap verkeken.

Toch zin om je te onderscheiden in de door HTC sense en Samsung Touchwiz beheerste Android-markt? Dan kun je de Motorola Dext vanaf nu bestellen bij PDAshop. Meer informatie over de Dext met Motoblur is te vinden op de website van Motorola.

Het lijkt er op dat steeds meer smartphone-fabrikanten Android omarmen. Het ene na het andere nieuwe Android-toestel ziet het levenslicht en vage foto’s van nieuw te lanceren Androids overspoelen het internet. De LG E720 valt in deze laatste categorie. LG is al met twee Android-toestellen aanwezig op de Nederlandse markt, de GW620 en de GT540. Binnenkort kan daar wel eens een derde Android-toestel aan toegevoegd worden. Over de specificaties is niet meer bekend dan dat er een 5Mp camera aan boord is, het touchscreen 3,2 Inch groot is en als processor een Qualcomm MSM7227 dienst doet.

Wanneer je goed naar de opstart-animatie in onderstaand filmpje kijkt zul je het logo van een bekende provider zien langskomen. Kunnen we binnenkort een nieuwe Android in het assortiment van T-mobile verwachten?

Microsoft heeft vandaag officieel de Android-app van hun zoekmachine Bing aangekondigd. De Bing-app is voorlopig alleen beschikbaar voor klanten van de Amerikaanse operator Verizon. Met de Bing Android-app hebben Verizon klanten nu de beschikking over een uitgebreide zoek-applicatie inclusief voice-search, hierbij is het voldoende om je zoekwoord in te spreken waarna de app je keurig de verschillende resultaten toont. Voor doorgewinterde Android-gebruikers niets nieuws, Google heeft deze optie immers al langer. Het vergelijk met Google stopt overigens niet bij de voice-search, ook Bing heeft namelijk een Maps-optie. Inderdaad, zoals Google-maps. Verschil is echter dat Bing-maps geen navigatie-optie kent met gesproken instructies.

Het lijkt er op dat Microsoft op deze manier toch nog een voet tussen de deur probeert te krijgen bij Android-gebruikers. Het is echter de vraag of die zitten te wachten op een extra app die een regelrechte kopie van Google lijkt te zijn, en al standaard op je Android-telefoon aanwezig is. Of we de Bing Android-app binnenkort ook in Nederland kunnen verwelkomen is niet duidelijk.

Motorola timmert hard aan de weg als het op nieuwe Android-telefoons aankomt. Daarbij gaan ze een enkele design-experiment niet uit de weg, getuige o.a. de Motorola Charm en de Motorola Flipout. Ook hun nieuwe Android-telg heeft overigens een hardware QWERTY-toetsenbord. En deze schuift niet zoals bij de milestone uit naar de zijkant, maar naar onderen. Een zogenaamde portrait-slider zoals eerder toegepast op de Palm Pre. Dit heeft als voordeel dat je niet eerst je Android-telefoon een kwartslag hoeft te draaien wanneer je van het hardware toetsenbord gebruik wilt maken. Duidelijk beelden zijn er al wel van de XT300, de specificaties zijn helaas nog in nevelen gehuld.

Het is nog onduidelijk wanneer deze nieuwe Android van Motorola op de markt komt. Hopelijk starten meer Android-fabrikanten een design-experiment zodat er straks wat ontwerp en functionaliteit betreft voor elke doelgroep een Android-telefoon te koop is.
