De opzet van Line Runner is simpel en de graphics zijn op zijn zachtst gezegd nogal basic te noemen. Neemt niet weg dat het een behoorlijk verslavende game is waar je menig uurtje zoet mee kunt zijn. Het doel van Line Runner is om over objecten heen te springen of er juist onderdoor te rollen om zo een zo groot mogelijke afstand af te leggen. Er zijn 10 verschillende “tracks” beschikbaar waarbij de eerste paar goed te doen zijn maar daarna worden ze aanzienlijk moeilijker. In de basis lijkt 8-bit vs 16-bit sterk op het aloude Space Invaders. Ook het doel is eigenlijk hetzelfde: schiet alle aliens neer voordat ze de grond raken. Voor het schieten zijn geen speciale knoppen op het scherm aanwezig maar wordt gebruik gemaakt van tap-and-shoot, je raakt eenvoudigweg de aliens aan die je wilt raken. Klinkt eenvoudig? Toch valt dit in de praktijk nog behoorlijk tegen. De aliens komen namelijk als 8-bit en 16-bit variant naar beneden dwarrelen en onderin het scherm vind je de bijbehorende 8-bit en 16-bit knop. Wanneer je de 8-bit knop selecteert kun je alleen de bijbehorende 8-bit aliens neerschieten en hetzelfde principe gaat uiteraard op voor de 16-bit knop. Dit betekend dat je tijdens het spelen eindeloos moet schakelen tussen deze beide knoppen om alle aliens op tijd neer te halen.

8-bit vs 16-bit is een leuke game die een flinke aanslag op je reactievermogen doet en heeft precies genoeg “retro” aan boord om je het ouderwetse gaming-gevoel te laten ervaren. Downloaden kan in de Apple App Store alwaar een gratis versie te vinden is die is voorzien van in-app-advertenties en een €0.79 kostende advertentie-vrije versie. Beide versie zijn overigens ook geschikt voor de iPod Touch en iPad

3D Magic chess is wellicht nog het beste te vergelijken met de game Battle Chess dat eind jaren tachtig verscheen voor verschillende platformen. Bij 3D Magic Chess zijn, net als bij voorloper Battle Chess, de schaakstukken ingewisseld voor een bord vol bijzondere figuren die het prima zouden doen in een fantasy-film. Zo is bijvoorbeeld het paard verandert in een vuurspuwende en vliegende draak. Wanneer je een zet wilt doen selecteer je het bewuste schaakstuk. Na selectie is aan de hand van een aantal gekleurde vlakken te zien waar je het betreffende schaakstuk naar toe kunt verplaatsen. Heb je je keuze genaakt dan schuift het stuk niet gewoon naar zijn nieuwe positie maar zie je bijvoorbeeld dat een loper zich met getrokken zwaard naar zijn nieuwe positie begeeft. Staat er op die plaats al een ander schaakstuk dan moet er gestreden worden, letterlijk te vuur en te zwaard. En dan is het best bijzonder te zien dat wanneer je met je paard een loper van het bord veegt dit in 3D Magic Chess wordt uitgebeeld door een wild opvliegende draak die van de loper een hoopje as maakt.

3D Magic Chess biedt je de mogelijkheid tegen je iPhone te spelen, of via wifi tegen een andere speler. Het aloude schaakspel blijft natuurlijk hetzelfde en de regels veranderen met de komst van deze iPhone-game niet, maar deze game zorgt er in ieder geval voor dat een potje schaak er ineens een stuk spannender uit ziet.. Opvallend is wel dat ondanks de fraaie graphics en animaties 3D Magic Chess gewoon gratis te downloaden is in de Apple App Store.

Wanneer je tijdens het spelen van een game via de multitask-functie naar links scrolt zul je zien dat de “play”-knop grijs is en niet gebruikt kan worden. Er is echter een eenvoudige methode om toch de iPod-functie te starten.

Een andere methode is iets omslachtiger en vereist de Apple-headset die bij je iPhone is geleverd

• Om het geluid uit de luidspreker van je iPhone te horen kun je de headset weer uit je iphone halen.

Ook nu zul je horen dat de muziek uit je iPod-app gewoon gestart wordt. Van een enkele game zul je via de instellingen de in-game geluiden eerst moeten uitschakelen, zoals bijvoorbeeld bij Angry Birds, om te voorkomen dat je de game en je eigen muziek tegelijk hoort. Bij andere games is dit nodig. Bijvoorbeeld Rayman wordt er letterlijk stil van wanneer je de iPod-app start.

Bovenstaande oplossingen zijn overigens getest op een iPhone 4 met standaard iOS 4.3.3 zonder jailbreak en een standaard Apple iPhone-headset. Het is weer eens wat anders om bijvoorbeeld Angry Birds te spelen vergezeld van een flinke portie Slayer.

Neemt niet weg dat de nieuwe Android-games van Gameloft zeker de moeite waard zijn. Ga maar vast sparen voor The Settlers, Dungeon Hunter 2, Starfront: Collision, Sacred Odyssey, Nova 2, Fast 5, Eternal Legacy, en Shadow Guardian.

Final Fantasy is absoluut een fantastische game en zelfs een ware classic waar je zeker een flink aantal uurtjes zoet mee zal zijn, maar die prijs is wel erg hoog. Het zou wel eens de duurste game kunnen zijn die tot nu toe in de Apple App Store te vinden is. Is dit een tijdelijke prijs waarmee distributeur Square veel geld probeert te verdienen aan fans van het eerste uur die niet kunnen wachten om de game op hun iOS-device te spelen, of is dit een eerste stap om de prijs van iPhone en console games op een gelijk niveau te krijgen. Hopelijk is dit niet een gevalletje “goed voorbeeld doet volgen” en blijven iOS games op een meer acceptabel prijspeil.

Gelukkig is NVIDIA Tegra Zone niet een extra app-store maar een een soort van etalage voor Tegra 2 geoptimaliseerde apps. In Tegra Zone vind je twee afdelingen: Spotlight en Games. In Spotlight komen de games in een carrousel langs met duidelijke weergave van de prijs. Je vind er een korte omschrijving, waarderingen van andere gebruikers en een “Get it now” knop. Wanneer je die laatste selecteert ga je direct naar de games-afdeling waar je meer informatie over het betreffende spel kunt vinden zoals een paar screenshots, een filmpje en de recensies.

Ben je onder de indruk van een bepaald spel dan kun je de betreffende pagina van Tegra Zone via Twitter, Facebook of email delen met je vrienden. Wanneer je de “Buy” knop selecteert opent automatisch de normale Android Market zodat je het spel kunt aanschaffen en installeren. Je hoeft je voor het gebruik van Tegra Zone op geen enkele wijze te registreren, en dat is wel zo prettig. Dat lijkt in eerste instantie eenvoudiger dan het is. Het probleem is namelijk dat de stukken ongekookte spaghetti niet erg sterk zijn en zomaar kunnen breken. Daarnaast zorgt de spaghetti er voor dat je hele bouwwerk niet erg stabiel is en nogal beweegt met als resultaat dat de marshmallow die je probeert in de cirkel te krijgen het doel nogal vaak voorbij schiet. Het is dus de kunst om een bepaald evenwicht in je bouwwerk te krijgen zonder dat het te groot en te zwaar wordt en daardoor instort.

Spaghetti and Marshmallows vereist minimaal android 2.1 en is er als een gratis versie met 9 levels en een €1,62 kostende volledige versie met 33 levels. Fish in five exotic locals as you attempt to use the correct tackle land particular types of fish. Slowly reel in your line to lure fish, tug the line with a quick shake of the iPhone to attract fish. Once a fish bites, don’t reel in to quickly else the line will break.
	107. Brothers in Arms 2: Global Front (4 stars, $4.99) is a WWII first-person shooter with lots of well-designed missions that follow a script, but are nonetheless challenging to complete. Compelling WWII environments and situations and fast-paced action are what make this game fun to play through.
	108. Cake Mania 3 (4 stars, $4.99) is a time-management game where you must keep customers satisfied by filling their orders for cake. This version adds a fun time-travel element to create baked goods throughout time (using modern equipment though). Challenging game and cute graphics.
	109. Ranch Rush (4 stars, $1.99) is a farm-simulator where your rush against the clock to fulfill orders for a farmer’s market by growing the correct crops. Nice strategic elements such as having the correct farm layout as well having to create more complex items such as cheese and jam from your various farm elements.
	110. Supermarket Mania (4 stars, $2.99) is a casual time-management game where you must run a successful supermarket. You play a bubbly blond teen who is responsibe for keeping customers happy and the store hopping by stocking shelves, dealing with juvenile delinquents, and cleaning up trash customers drop. Earn money and purchase better items for the supermarket to sell. Sounds like work but it’s actually fun. Features pleasant cartoon graphics.
